Going on a vacation or traveling can result in disruption to your usual workout routine, a newly amended plan, or having to temporarily drop a particular exercise, or all three. It can be really challenging keeping fit while traveling.

Most fitness enthusiasts will try to exercise whenever they can but a vacation is meant for relaxation and possibly a break away from your most intense workout. Plus packing workout clothes can be challenging.

That being said, if you’re serious about your workout then you might not want to stop altogether and lose some of the results from the hard work you have put in over the years.

While you may not want to get too intense while on vacation, there are some fun ways you can keep up the fitness while still enjoying a well-earned break.

Keeping fit while traveling can include:

  • Chain Gyms
  • Local Running Spots
  • See the Sights

Established exercise companies can be found all over and offer relatively cheap temporary passes for non-members while local running spots can be a great way to get to know a new place and the people and planning a fitness walk of the closest tourist sites means you can make the most of your destination and keep some calories away.

Chain Gyms

For many fitness enthusiasts, their local gym is a home away from home and a valued and important part of their lives. Whether you love them or loathe them, the good thing about chain gyms is that they can be found everywhere, like a fast-food chain or supermarket, so popping into one for a temporary workout is always an option.

No matter where you are, gyms such as Fitness 19 offer a great way to exercise, meet new people and get professional advice. Most offer reasonably priced temporary passes but you may already be a member, in which case you might be able to use the facilities for free, but not all passes extend to international or even inter-regional gym locations.

Local Running Spots

One of the best ways to get to know a particular place and the local people is to go jogging around the best spots that are used by the locals, or take a running tour. Many of these places usually take you to hidden parts of a city or town that isn’t normally frequented by tourists and while they may not be exciting they are usually quiet, serene, or near a place of natural beauty such as a forest, coastline or park.

To find the best spots simply ask around at your hotel or place of accommodation and you are bound to find somebody who can point you in the right direction. However, you should be aware that some local people really don’t like to point out such locations to tourists or strangers so a very friendly and humble approach should be adopted.

See the Sights

On the other hand, you can make the most of local tourist attractions by walking or jogging to them instead of taking local public transport such as cabs, trains, and buses.

There is a limit as to how far you can run, depending on your fitness level, so planning this out is essential. Many cities have a multitude of tourist attractions such as monuments, museums, and novelties which are usually located close to each other in the city center. But it’s a great way to keeping fit while traveling.

You should remember that running to a particular place is all well and good but you need to keep in mind that you have to get back to your accommodation after a day out, so plan the return journey well if you don’t intend to run, cycle, or jog back as well.

However, being in or around a city center means that there will be many transport options available after you take a nice sauna break or get a massage.
