Da Nang Bridge: Watch the Dragon Breathe Fire and Explore the Market

Spanning 666 meters across the Han River, the Da Nang Bridge is a six-lane steel bridge that connects Da Nang International Airport to the city’s main roads and beaches.

What sets this bridge apart is its dragon design, inspired by the Ly Dynasty’s dragon, symbolizing power and good fortune.

It was built in 2013, coinciding with the 38th anniversary of Da Nang’s liberation during the Vietnam War.

On the weekend, the bridge comes alive with 2,500 LED lights that illuminate the dragon’s body, creating a mesmerizing visual experience. Plus, it is located right next to a night market.

I visited the bridge when I stayed in Da Nang for a month. Here are my tips for making the most of your evening!

Fire and Water Show: A Weekend Spectacle

Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9:00 PM, the Dragon Bridge hosts a spectacular fire and water show.

During this 15-minute performance, the dragon breathes fire and sprays water. The show is short and kind of underwhelming, however, it’s a popular place for locals to hang out on the weekend.

Best Viewing Spots:

  • On the Bridge: Arrive early to secure a spot directly on the bridge for an up-close experience.
  • Riverside: The area along Bach Dang Street offers a panoramic view of the show.
  • Boat Cruise: For a unique perspective, consider watching the show from a Han River cruise.

Where Not to Stand:

  • Avoid standing too close to the dragon’s head, as the fire and water can reach spectators. I watched several people try to run away from the water blast, it was quite funny!

Son Tra Night Market: A Culinary and Shopping Delight

Adjacent to the Dragon Bridge is the bustling Son Tra Night Market, open daily from 5:00 PM to midnight. There are many souvenirs, knick knacks, snacks and food vendors.

It gets VERY crowded on the weekends, so it is better to go on a weeknight at 5 pm, and then come back for the fire show at a different time. You can see the crowds here:

What to Expect:

  • Street Food: Indulge in local delicacies like banh xeo (Vietnamese pancakes), grilled seafood, and fresh fruit juices.
  • Shopping: Browse through stalls offering souvenirs, clothing, and handmade crafts.
  • Facilities: The market provides seating areas and public restrooms for visitors’ convenience.

Dining Options Near the Da Nang Bridge

If you’re looking to dine before the evening show, here are three restaurants within walking distance:

Red Sky Steakhouse: Known for its premium steaks and extensive wine list, this restaurant offers a cozy ambiance perfect for a pre-show dinner. (West Side of the bridge)

Fatfish Restaurant & Lounge Bar: Offering a fusion of Asian and Western cuisines, Fatfish provides riverside seating with a view of the Da Nang Dragon Bridge.

Pizza 4P’s: A popular spot for artisanal pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients, ideal for families and groups. This is also my favorite pizza in Da Nang.

Experience the Show from the Water

For a memorable experience, consider watching the Dragon Bridge show from a Han River cruise.

These cruises typically depart around 8:15 PM, offering a front-row seat to the spectacle.

Some cruises also provide dinner options, allowing you to enjoy local cuisine as you take in the sights.
