Tuscany might be famous for rolling vineyards and art-filled cities, but if you’re looking for something more exciting, Bagni di Lucca is your answer.
Nestled in the Apennine mountains just north of Lucca, this charming thermal town is also an unexpected playground for outdoor and adrenaline activities.
During my two-month stay in Lucca, I had the chance to experience a few of these activities. I plan to return to do the rest of them.
Here is my guide for all of the fun activities in Bagni di Lucca!
Key Takeaways
- Bagni di Lucca is easy to reach from Lucca, Pisa, or Florence by train or car.
- Adrenaline activities include rafting, canyoning, hiking, biking, and ziplining.
- Canyon Park and the Lima River are top spots for outdoor adventures.

Where is Bagni di Lucca and How to Get There
Bagni di Lucca is located about 30 kilometers north of Lucca, tucked into the lush hills of northern Tuscany.
If you’ve already explored Lucca (don’t miss my Lucca travel guide), Bagni di Lucca is the perfect escape into the northern part of the region.
You can reach Bagni di Lucca by train from Lucca, Pisa, or Florence. The local train station is Bagni di Lucca Station, though it’s technically in nearby Fornoli.
The train station is indicated on my map below as #1. From the train station, you may need to call a taxi to get to the activity. I used Lucca Taxi as Uber is more difficult to get in Lucca.
Trains from Lucca take around 45 minutes. From Florence, expect closer to two hours with a change in Lucca. If you’re coming from Pisa, it’s about an hour and a half with a transfer.
If you have a car, you can drive from Lucca in under an hour, and it is an easy ride. I used Discover Cars to book my weekend trips from Lucca.
Map of Activities in Bagni Di Lucca
Canyon Park: Ziplining, SUP, and Forest Trails
Address: Scesta, 55022 Bagni di Lucca LU, Italy (#2 on the map)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Family Friendly: Yes (minimum age requirements for some activities)
Book here: Canyon Park
This is the top outdoor experience in Bagni di Lucca. Canyon Park is located inside a stunning natural gorge carved by the Lima River, and it combines nature, adrenaline, and safety in one package.
You can start your day with a zipline across the canyon, then try your balance with stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in the crystal-clear waters.
For something more immersive, book the aerial forest route—a high ropes course suspended among the trees.
What I loved most was how peaceful the environment felt, even during the activities. You’ll hear birds chirping and water rushing, all while you’re clipped into a harness high above the ground.
Allow 2 to 3 hours, depending on which package you choose.

White Water Rafting on the Lima River
Address: Via Campiglia 2, 55022 Bagni di Lucca LU, Italy (#3 on the map)
Difficulty: Moderate
Family Friendly: Yes (kids 8 and older)
Book here: Rafting Experience
Yes, Tuscany has white water rafting! I was as shocked as you are.
The Lima River winds through rocky terrain, making it the perfect spot for a white water rafting experience. It’s thrilling without being extreme, which makes it ideal for families or first-timers.
The guides are all certified and provide top-tier gear, from helmets to wetsuits. You’ll raft through gentle rapids and get the occasional adrenaline-pumping drop.
Trips usually take 2 to 2.5 hours, including a safety briefing and transport.
Travel Insurance for Extreme Activities
I suggest using SafetyWing for travel insurance when traveling abroad. I have found their rates to be the best coverage, and they have great customer service.
Canyoning: Jump, Slide, and Rappel
Address: Meet at Canyon Park or arrange pickup nearby (#2 on the map)
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Family Friendly: Not suitable for small children (minimum age 14)
Book here: Canyoning Tour
If you’re looking for a true challenge, canyoning is super fun! I did something similar in the Philippines and it was the highlight of my trip.
This activity combines hiking, climbing, sliding down rocks, and rappelling through narrow waterfalls. It’s rugged, raw, and incredibly fun.
You’ll need a decent fitness level and no fear of heights or cold water.
Tours last about 3 hours and require you to swim, jump, and you’ll be with a certified instructor guiding every step. Helmets, harnesses, and wetsuits are provided.

Hiking Trails Around Bagni di Lucca
Start Point: Various trailheads around town (#4 on the map)

More info: Bagni di Lucca Trail Maps
Bagni di Lucca is laced with well-marked trails leading to waterfalls, viewpoints, and quiet forest paths.
One of the best moderate hikes is to Prato Fiorito, a panoramic peak that gives you sweeping views of the Serchio Valley.
This trail takes around 3 hours round trip and starts from the hamlet of Montefegatesi. It’s steep but manageable.
For an easier stroll, follow the path along the Lima River, perfect for a picnic and birdwatching.
You can also book a hiking tour with a guide, if you prefer not to go it alone (like me).
Pro Tip for Wifi:
To stay connected to the internet while in the woods, I use an E-sim called Airalo, in conjunction with a local sim. You can purchase the e-sim at any time, as long as your phone is E-sim compatible.
Mountain Biking Through the Apennines
Bike Rentals: Available in Bagni di Lucca or nearby Lucca (#5 is a train start on the map)
Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced
Family Friendly: Teens and adults
See Trails Here: Mountain Biking Trails
The area around Bagni di Lucca has a few mountain biking trails. Expect a mix of gravel roads, forest trails, and steep climbs that reward you with descents and panoramic views.
There are several loop trails that start in the town center and head into the mountains. One favorite is the trail from Fornoli to Montefegatesi, winding through olive groves and medieval villages along the way.
You can rent bikes locally or bring your own. Tours with guides are also available if you want local insight and mechanical backup.

Thermal Pools to Chill After the Thrill
Address: Terme Bagni di Lucca, Piazza San Martino 11, 55022 (#6 on the map)
Difficulty: Easy
Family Friendly: Yes
Book here: Bagni di Lucca Spa
After all that adrenaline, don’t skip the town’s indoor thermal baths. The spa has been operating since Roman times and offers several soaking pools, saunas, and treatments.
It’s the perfect way to end a high-energy day. You’ll float in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by historic architecture and mountain air.
Most spa visits last around 90 minutes, but you can easily stay longer.
