Are There Any Attractions in Canggu? The Short Answer Is No

When you think of Bali, you probably imagine breathtaking waterfalls, ancient temples, lush jungles, and incredible cliffside views.

You’ve likely seen your favorite influencers swinging over rice terraces or posing in front of dramatic waterfalls. But here’s the truth—none of those iconic attractions are in Canggu!

What you see on social media is all located in Ubud, Uluwatu, North Bali, and Nusa Penida.

In this post, I will show you what one of the “attractions” in Canggu is, and where to go to get those famous pics you see online.

Key Takeaways:

  • Not a Typical Tourist Spot: Canggu is known for its cafes, beach clubs, and laid-back vibe—not traditional attractions.
  • Best Sights Are Nearby: Major temples and waterfalls are outside Canggu in places like Ubud and Uluwatu.
  • Closest Must-See: Tanah Lot Temple is just 30 minutes away and perfect for sunset views.

What Canggu Is Really About

Canggu might be trending all over social media, but it’s not the place to find Bali’s natural or cultural wonders.

It’s a hotspot for beach clubs, gyms, cafes, coworking spaces, trendy restaurants, and nightlife. If that’s your scene, you’ll love it.

But if you came here for actual tourist attractions in Canggu like waterfalls, temples, or scenic hikes, you’re in the wrong place.

The beach in Canggu isn’t even anything special. The sand is dark, the water isn’t crystal clear, and the waves are rough—perfect for surfers, but not for people who like to lie out in the sun all day.

You will need to travel at least an hour (if you are lucky) to see the iconic Bali attractions.

What Can You See in Canggu?

If you’re really pushing to see something, you can visit Tanah Lot Temple. It’s about 30 minutes from central Canggu (longer if traffic is bad, which it usually is).

This sea temple sits on a rock formation and is most famous at sunset. It’s not technically in Canggu, but it’s close enough to mention.

Tanah Lot Temple

  • Hours: 7 AM – 7 PM
  • Entry Fee: Around IDR 60,000 per person
  • What Makes It Special: Sunset views over the ocean with a dramatic temple backdrop
  • Website: https://www.tanahlot.id/

But after that? There’s really nothing else that counts as major tourist attractions in Canggu.

Bali Quick Tips

  • Water Safety: Tap water is not safe to drink. Most hotels and restaurants provide filtered water.
  • Currency: Idonesian Rupiah (IDR)
  • Bring Cash: Most smaller shops, cafes, and drivers prefer cash. However, most establishments and delivery apps accept credit cards.
  • Language: Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is the national language, but English is commonly spoken in tourist areas.
  • Visa: Check this website to see if you need a visa or not.
  • Forms and Fees: In addition to the visa, you need to fill out a Health Pass and Customs Declaration and pay the Love Bali tax.
  • Bathroom Etiquette: Do not flush toilet paper. Use the provided bin.
  • Scooter Safety: Scooters are the primary way to get around, but driving is chaotic.
  • Tipping Etiquette: Many restaurants add a 5-10% service charge as tipping is not customary in Bali.
  • Be Prepared for Traffic: Bali’s roads can be very congested, especially around tourist hubs like Canggu, Seminyak, and Ubud. Allow extra time for travel.
  • Book in Advance: Popular activities (like temple tours or sunrise hikes) and accommodations fill up quickly in peak season.

Where are the Real Attractions in Bali?

Ubud, Uluwatu, North Bali, and Nusa Penida are where the attractions are located in Bali. All of which are all at least an hour outside of Canggu.

To get to most of them, you can drive your own scooter, or hire a private driver.

Most of the attractions do not sell out, so you can book your adventure when you arrive in Bali.

Many of the private drivers will have a list of things to see in the back of the driver’s seat, which can help you get an idea of which attractions to tackle.

My driver’s info is at the end of the post. Feel free to message him.

There is so much to see in Bali that it would take ages to list everything. But here are a few attractions in each area of Bali to get you started!

Pro Tip for Traveling to Bali

Several documents and fees are required before entering Bali. Make sure you take care of them before arrival to skip several lines at the airport.

Ubud: Jungle Adventures and Cultural Experiences

If you’ve been scrolling social media and seeing waterfalls, swings, and rice terraces in Bali, that’s all in Ubud.

It is located about 90 minutes from Canggu (longer if you hit traffic). It’s perfect for a day trip or a couple of nights away from the beach clubs.

Here are some 5 must-see tourist attractions near Ubud:

Uluwatu: Beaches and Culture on the Cliffs

Head south to Uluwatu for dramatic cliffs, white sand beaches, and iconic cultural shows. This is where the infamous fire dance show is held that you see on TikTok.

It’s about two hours south of Canggu, depending on traffic, so it is best to go with a group, instead of trying to drive there on a scooter.

Here are some highlights:

Nusa Penida: Island Escape

For those looking for a real adventure, Nusa Penida is just a short boat ride from the east coast of Bali. You can visit as a day trip or stay overnight.

You need to drive 90 minutes to the Sanur Pier and then take a 30-minute fast boat to the island. Traffic can get bad later in the day, so leave at 7 am to avoid a longer car ride than needed.

Once on the island, you can drive your own scooter or hire a driver to take you to the spots below.
